Associated Grocers of Maine was founded in 1953 by a group of central Maine retailers with a spirit and vision for success. What started out as a cooperative of 44 members, serviced from an 11,000 square foot dry warehouse, has now grown to over 300 stores plus serviced by a 261,000 square foot multi-temp state of the art facility. AG of Maine carved its niche in the marketplace by offering products and services that meet the demands of today's independent retailer. Our "back to basics" management philosophy also provides retailers with an excellent support system including experienced retail counseling services.
In 1953, product loading and distribution was performed by manual labor and deliveries consisted of full cases that were unloaded by hand, All orders were called in and transactions were hand written.
AG of Maine's current distribution facility was built in 1986. In 2006, we completed a $5M expansion of 41,000 sq. ft. of refrigerated space to accommodate increased perishable sales. Currently, our "state of the art facility" comprises over 261,000 sq. ft. and allows us to offer a wide variety of products and services which enhance the success and profitability of our member retailers.
All orders are received electronically, our forklift operators receive their assignments via radio frequency with computers and our selectors select product using "hands free" Vocollect equipment. Inventory is managed through our WCSS (World Wide Chain Store) inventory management system and ensures we maintain an exceptionally high service level.
AG of Maine strives to use technology whenever possible to make our operation as efficient as possible in order to reduce costs for our customers and position the company for future growth.
Our deliveries are consistently on time and our fleet of trucks & trailers are all equipped with lift gates for pallet delivery and air by ride for freight integrity.
